The Talking Piece: An Instrument of Shalom

Blog Archives:

This blog was written by Learning Leader Diane Stronks who is working alongside co-leader Alice Vanderkooy with Haitian educators and leaders as part of the Christian Education in Haiti: A Restorative Approach Walking Together project.

One of things that is totally underestimated in learning about Restorative Practices is the power of the talking piece in conversations, circles and conferences.

A Talking Piece can be just about anything.  It may be a small rubber ball or a stone or a special stick or even a feather.  One of the beautiful activities in Christian schools could be having students craft or decide what is their favourite talking piece.

The Talking Piece is a new concept in our Haitian training.  Only the person with the Talking Piece is allowed to talk.  In a circle, everyone is invited to contribute as the piece is given from one person to another.

In the picture that is shared here, Thomas is sharing a story in the Restorative Conference and you'll notice he has the Restorative Question (in French) sitting there for reference.  It is such a privilege to work with these amazing people of CRECH!  They are eager to learn and willing to try new pedagogy and practices in order to create space for restoration and reconciliation in their communities.
