Celebrating what God is Doing

This blog was written by Walking Together Learning Leader Tena Siebenga-Valstar who is serving and learning together with Robert Koole by facilitating a project in Nicaragua called Sustaining School Improvement.

On Friday, we were invited to a professional development day where Caroline, one of the ACECEN facilitators had the teachers from several schools share projects with the other schools. The teachers included aspects of the school improvement plan. They had been focusing on this over the past year. Some were eager to have us listen to their stories as they celebrated what they were doing with the children in the classroom. We saw evidence resulting from the work done with the facilitators during the past years. Although the class size is large and resources are limited, efforts are made to use manipulatives (e.g. puppets) in the classroom. There is a great desire to improve the education in the Christian schools in Nicaragua. They indeed have reasons to celebrate.

In the afternoon, we visited a school in a poor neighborhood. Although gathering the information for the school improvement plan was a lot of work, the benefit was already evident. The school had a much better understanding of who they were as a school and what had to be done to become a better school.

They were thankful for Maria, an eleven-year teacher at the school who, being paid minimum salary, had a great desire to learn. This kind of loyalty is unusual because many of the teachers stay for only one year.

They were thankful to Ana, the ACECEN facilitator who faithfully helped them to improve, training the teachers how to integrate a biblical worldview in their teaching practice.

They now see a future for their school.

I well remember my first visit to some of the schools in Nicaragua as the Walking Together Program teacher leader training was just beginning to challenge and equip teachers to change their educational approach. It is wonderful to see the growth in pedagogical understandings and a deeper understanding of God's work and purposes in this world. This is impacting children, families and communities. Praise God.
