Investing in The Most Important Teachers: Mom and Dad

Schools in Nicaragua invest in their most important teachers: The Student’s Mom and Dad.

Ingrid sits in a chair in a classroom of Life Link Education Center. It’s one of the same chairs her son, Daniel, uses. He’s a first level student at Life Link. Tonight, though, it isn’t Daniel who’s receiving the education… It’s Ingrid.

This special class – dubbed as a ‘school for parents’ – is part of Nicaragua’s School Improvement Plan, a 5 year initiative to improve education for children in Nicaragua.

Parents – it was discovered – are one of the major barriers to giving children in Nicaragua the best quality, Christ-centred education. For a child to truly flourish, parents needed to be invested in their education and committed to modelling the love of Christ to their child.

That’s why EduDeo’s Partner, ACECEN, started the School for Parents.

School for Parents

The School for Parents is a series of classes designed to help moms and dads be better parents – making sure they know what is developmentally appropriate behaviour for their child and covering topics such as discipline and multiple intelligences.

It’s also a way to include parents – the child’s most important teacher – in the school’s vision for Christ-centred education… to model Jesus Christ in every subject, in every moment of a child’s life.

These courses have already had a tremendous impact on parents.

Ingrid’s story

“The sessions we received have been very instructive for my life,” Ingrid says. “I didn’t understand my son’s behaviour before. As adults, we forget that our children have different stages of development. We, as parents, often demand our children do things they are still not capable of doing.”

This realization helped improve Ingrid’s relationship with her son Daniel.

“Many people used to tell me that they were going to take [Daniel] out of school because his behaviour was different. Because he was very naughty and wasn’t going to learn good values,” Ingrid remembers. “I’ve been able to understand that as my son grows, he will learn. Since he entered Life Link, his behaviour has changed… now he’s one of the best students in his class.”

Other parents – such as Fernando – had other encouraging things to say about the classes.

“Participating in the sessions has allowed me to treat my children better,” Fernando says. “I’ve learned I need to be more tolerant. And to correct them with love… This learning process has also awakened interest to take up again my commitment to God, to be an example to my children.”

Your support – your Sponsorship, your investment in EduDeo Ministries, is making this transformation possible.

Stronger families = stronger schools = more children transformed through the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
